Gardening expert's brilliant hack stops pests lurking and helps your lawn bloom – The Mirror

There’s nothing more frustrating than seeing your plants have been ruined by pests – an expert has weighed in on how a ‘genius’ and ‘brilliant’ tip could help save your garden
A gardening expert has weighed in on how to protect your plants from pests this spring and how to help your garden bloom.
Whether you are an experienced grower or just starting out on your green-fingered journey, TikTok has a wealth of hacks to make gardening and plant care easier. However, with so much advice on our fingertips, it can be tricky to know which hacks are good ideas and which could be harmful to your plants.
Gardening expert Hannah Rowson, from leading gardening retailer J.Parker's, has shared how valuable she thinks one viral gardening hack is. It comes after an Australian woman Kia Jade – an urban gardener – shared that she has been using mesh bags in her garden in a bid to protect her growing vegetables.
The hack involves using a small mesh bag to both protect plants from hungry pests and collect seeds from plants in bloom. Fellow garden enthusiasts praised the hack and describing it as "genius". Kia said she was able to get a packet of mesh bags from Amazon for $10 (£5.18) and loves that they have two purposes for her garden.
She said you are "really missing out" if you don't give the trick a go. Kia explained: "They protect my vegetables from pests or birds getting to them." She added that she is able to collect seeds more easily by placing a mesh bag on the end of plants. The gardening enthusiast said you can reuse the bags over and over again. "I never throw them out," she said on TikTok.
One individual said the hack left their "mind blown", adding it is a "great tip". "To collect seeds is a good idea," another wrote. One other commented: "Oh my god, genius. All my figs keep getting eaten!"
Gardening expert Hannah Rowson said the tip is "brilliant". She said: "This multi-use hack is a brilliant way to get more from your garden, both in terms of produce and seeds. They’re also a great way to keep pests away from your fruits and veggies, without the need to use harmful chemicals which can be bad for the environment, humans, and pets."
Speaking about using the bags to collect seeds, she warns that people should be careful and wait until the plants have finished blooming and petals are beginning to drop before putting the bags on them. "This will allow pollinating insects and bees to still visit the flowers to feed," she added.
