This puzzle may have you scratching your head for a few moments, as it requires you to scan a dimly lit office for a secret item – a games controller. Creators claim that while it usually takes people to finish in half a minute, almost one in five admit to giving up on the brain teaser completely and skipping to the answer section.
Generally, brain teasers are mind-boggling puzzles that help our minds stay active while boosting our problem-solving skills. R esearch, led by the University of Exeter, shows that playing these games on a regular basis can actually work to exercise our memory muscles, bolstering brain health.
The results of this study were even presented at an Alzheimer's conference in 2018, as experts claim there may be a link between puzzles and keeping dementia at bay. "We've found that the more regularly people engage with puzzles such as crosswords and Sudoku, the sharper their performance is across a range of tasks assessing memory, attention and reasoning," Dr Anne Corbett, of the University of Exeter Medical School, said at the time.
"The improvements are particularly clear in the speed and accuracy of their performance. In some areas the improvement was quite dramatic — on measures of problem-solving, people who regularly do these puzzles performed equivalent to an average of eight years younger compared to those who don't."
