Fuming WhatsApp users 'go mad' after spotting subtle change on their chats – The Mirror
People have been left feeling ‘unnerved’ about the latest change to social media app WhatsApp, with many demanding to know why Meta felt the need to change it
WhatsApp has left users fuming after silently launching a new change to its app without warning.
People have been left fuming after the messaging app rolled out the switch on its chat function, with some claiming that they're really "upset" about the difference.
Many won't have noticed, but when you're on a chat with a pal and they're online at the same time as you, underneath their contact name it used to say 'online', but now it says 'Online' with a capital letter, and it's driving people mad, including TikToker Samantha Mary.
Samantha said: "Has anybody else noticed on WhatsApp they've changed the little online to a capital O? You know when you message someone and it's got their name and then underneath it tells you their status of whether they're online or whatever, they've changed it to a capital O.
"Is anyone else as bothered about that as I am? I'm one of those people who notices the smallest little changes and it annoys me for absolutely ages. I keep looking at it and I'm like 'Why does it need a capital O?'. Is it a name? No. Is it a place? No. Is it the beginning of a sentence? No."
She continued to say that she was "bothered by it", arguing "If it ain't broke don't fix it" – and plenty of others agreed. In the comments, someone wrote: "Yes, I thought I was tripping", with another agreeing, saying: "I've noticed it too, and the 't' is now a capital T on 'typing'." Another TikTok user also noted that the L on 'last seen' is now a capital letter.
Comments also included: "I'm much more bothered by it than I should be. Petition to change it back immediately", "I hadn't noticed that but what's driving me insane is that my 'home' screen with the list of chats is now plain white rather than green, now it just looks so plain and I really don't like it", and "I've turned my online status off because I didn't like it".
On X, formerly Twitter, one woman penned: "WhatsApp changing the online status from online to Online has sent me west…why upset me like this." Another said they felt "unnerved" by the decision, and someone else said that it was "stressing" them out. "It's so distressing I don't want to know that someone is Typing with a capital T", a woman fumed, and someone else raged: "It's horrible".
The Mirror understands the change was a temporary measure.
