US Navy troops meals 'unveiled' – and people say it's 'worse than prison' – The Mirror
A former US Navy worker has shared a selection of photos of the food they were served up in the mess hall, and people are horrified at what they’ve seen
A bloke has revealed the shocking grub served to Navy troops, sparking claims that prison food might actually be a step up.
Serving in the armed forces, you'd expect top-notch meals to fuel the demanding work. However, one man with two decades of service in the US Navy begs to differ, claiming even "school food looks like a 5 star restaurant" compared to their offerings.
The revelation came after he shared images of the unappetising meals on Reddit, causing quite the stir online.
The snaps, which have left users gobsmacked, feature some questionable dishes including raw-looking chicken, dubious brown meat, a suspiciously pink hotdog, whole fruits and even mouldy bread.
The salmon and steak didn't escape scrutiny either, appearing dangerously undercooked. Despite the variety, none of the meals seem remotely tempting, leaving thousands of commenters in disbelief at what's being dished out on base.
The post has attracted over 2,000 comments, with people not mincing their words. It seems school dinners might just have been unfairly maligned all this time.
Reacting to the images, one person exclaimed: "A lot of this food looks downright dangerous to consume! " Another was baffled, commenting: "The last picture is literally just raw meat, wtf US Navy?"
One third respondent remarked: "The rainbow sheen is actually normal and not harmful at all. It's caused by light bouncing off the muscle fibers when sliced a certain way. The rest is horrific."
On the other hand, a fourth steered the conversation elsewhere: "Prisoners get better meals than this."
The buzz generated around this questionable mess hall fare provoked plenty of former military people to join in, and share their own dining experiences during service. The feedback, unsurprisingly, was diverse.
While some admitted they had eaten their fair share of dismal meals, others were shocked by what they saw, suggesting decent food can be found at certain bases.
One previous Navy member contributed: "I was in the U.S. Navy from '92-'96. I can confirm the shipboard food was really quite awful."
"I've never had more greasy, gamier, weird smelling burgers in my life. The rice always had way too much water, everything but the whole fruit or packaged breakfast cereal was just….off. And generally just nasty."
But another came back with: "Man, you must have had either terrible duty stations or the Navy sure has changed since I was in. My shore stations weren't too bad and shipboard food was excellent. Guess it all depends on the chef."
A different respondent added: "Honestly never ate better than underway. I still use a lot of the recipes I learned. If this is really all one ship then a whole class of Culinary Specialists must have missed every day of school and then all gone to the same galley."
US Navy officials have been contacted by Reach Plc for a response.
