A hunt for a legendary Japanese cryptid, bundles of mysterious cash found in Ohio bathrooms, and what might have been a goblin filmed by a security camera in Mexico were among the weird and wondrous stories to cross our desk this past week.
Two tales involving mysterious money wound up making news this past week, starting with a weird story from Ohio wherein nearly $40,000 in bundled bills was found hidden in the bathrooms of two restaurants. Cops in the city of Marysville, where the case occurred, are understandably bewildered as to why someone would stash so much cash in such puzzling spots and why the individual in question has yet to step forward to claim the curious ‘treasure.’ Meanwhile, a relatively small remnant of a $20 bill from the ransom money at the center of the D.B. Cooper skyjacking case sold for a whopping ten times its expected value at a recent auction.
A pair of odd stories out of Japan popped up in the news this past week, beginning with a search for a legendary cryptid known as the tsuchinoko. The annual monster hunt, which featured a staggering 800 participants, was held in the town of Higashishirakawa, where there have long been sightings of the curious creature said to resemble a snake with a beer bottle-sized bulge at the center of its body. Later in the week, the community of Fujikawaguchiko made headlines by way of an audacious plan to build a massive screen to block neighboring Mount Fuji after residents grew fed up with tourists flocking to the town to take pictures of the volcano, which is perfectly situated for selfies.
Easily the weirdest story of the week came by way of Mexico, where a security camera captured footage of a seemingly bipedal creature that had drawn comparisons to a goblin. In the wondrous video, which was filmed on a farm near the city of Monterrey, what appears to be a diminutive dark figure emerges from the woods, scurries across a road, and then vanishes in the brush. The manner in which the creature moved and its indecipherable appearance led many to suggest that a goblin or some other kind of supernatural being, though more skeptical observers argued that the ‘being’ was a prosaic animal such as a small skunk.
