BBC News star Clive Myrie admits it was 'weird' reporting on Huw Edwards scandal – The Mirror

Clive Myrie had the awkward task of covering news headlines that involved BBC News co-star Huw Edwards – whose career was torpedoed by scandalous private messages
BBC New host Clive Myrie has admitted it was 'weird' reporting on the scandal that engulfed co-star Huw Edwards last year.
The 59-year-old broadcaster has helmed the news from the BBC News desk since 2009 – and was a correspondent for more than a decade before that. Last year, the BBC was plunged into crisis when it was revealed that 62-year-old Huw had been paying a member of the public for explicit images and that he had first begun corresponding with the individual when they were just 17-years-old.
While Huw’s identity was initially not made public, a frenzy of speculation forced the hand of the presenter’s wife to unmask him as the newsreader at the centre of the scandal. Huw was subsequently suspended by the BBC while an investigation was carried out and later resigned from his job as a top-earning TV star.
While the revelations shocked and stunned the wider British public, it seems the news was particularly awkward for those serving in the news studio at the Beeb. Now Clive has addressed the awkwardness of having to lead bulletins about Huw and the scandal.
Opening up to the Radio Times, he said: “When you end up doing a story that involves you reporting on your colleagues, it’s weird. That’s actually the best description. It’s just weird. Because you’re not usually there to be talking about the staff in your newsroom. So it’s not just Huw. It’s Frank Gardner getting shot in Saudi Arabia, it’s all kinds of stuff.” Explaining that there have been other awkward moments over the course of his BBC News career, Clive added: “Another classic example is – I was the guy who announced the pay bands when BBC pay was revealed.”
Huw’s resignation from the BBC was announced in April this year. A statement released by the Corporation at the time declare: “Huw Edwards has today resigned and left the BBC. After 40 years of service, Huw has explained that his decision was made on the basis of medical advice from his doctors.”
The announcement concluded: “The BBC has accepted his resignation which it believes will allow all parties to move forward. We don't believe it appropriate to comment further."
The Sun originally exposed Huw’s morally questionable behaviour that ultimately ended his TV career. However, messaging a member of the public and paying them for explicit images was not the only accusation made against him.
Despite being behind the news desk and guiding the UK through headlines throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, it was alleged that Huw broke lockdown rules himself in order to meet another individual aged 23 that he met via a dating app. Further claims were made that he messaged another 17-year-old via Instagram and sent messages containing love heart emojis.
When she unmasked Huw as the culprit of The Sun’s claims, wife Vicky Flind urged compassion, saying: “As is well documented, he has been treated for severe depression in recent years. The events of the last few days have greatly worsened matters, he has suffered another serious episode and is now receiving in-patient hospital care where he'll stay for the foreseeable future.”
