Ex-NBA player West arrested on multiple charges

Former NBA guard Delonte West was arrested and jailed in Virginia early Thursday morning on misdemeanor charges of violating the conditions of his release and resisting arrest, according to local authorities.

West, 40, is being held at the Fairfax County Detention Center on a $2,000 bond. He is scheduled to be arraigned in court at 8:30 a.m. EST Friday morning.

Fairfax County police spotted West around 1 a.m. in Groveton, Virginia, and sought to serve a warrant, police say. A pursuit ensued, and officers found him unresponsive after losing sight of him during the chase.

Narcan, which can be used to treat narcotic overdoses in an emergency, was initially administered to West and didn’t have the desired effect, according to a police statement. West was then transported to a local hospital, and Narcan worked after being administered a second time, police said. West was released from the hospital and transported to the Fairfax County Detention Center.

West, who publicly discussed his diagnosis of bipolar disorder during his NBA career, has battled issues with substance abuse in recent years. He was treated at a Florida drug rehabilitation therapy center in 2021 and later ended up working at the facility after former Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban helped him get his life back on track.

Cuban, who picked West up at a gas station in September 2020 after pictures circulated of West panhandling at an intersection in Dallas, was one of several people in the NBA who attempted to help West at the time.

West averaged 9.7 points and 3.6 assists per game over eight NBA seasons while playing for Boston Celtics, Seattle SuperSonics, Cleveland Cavaliers and Mavericks. He last played in 2011-12 with Dallas.
