A photo dubbed “the most convincing UFO photo ever” has been released over 50 years after it was first taken.
Aerial photographer Sergio Loaiza took the eerie snap using a100lb map-making camera as he flew over Costa Rica.
He was on a mission to survey land ahead of the construction of a hydroelectric project near the Arenal Volcano but spotted something odd.

As he flew over Lake Cote at around 10,000 feet, Loaiza took multiple high resolution black and white photos of the lake and surrounding rainforest during 20 second intervals.
However, in one frame he captured a shiny metallic disc, an image often referred to classic movie depicted aliens as a ‘flying saucer’
The object is visible only in frame number 300 before immediately seems to disappear afterwards.
Even more peculiar was the fact that no one , even the pilot, saw the object during the flight.
Despite close analysis from UFO sceptics, Loaiza’s image has never been fully explained, leading to a number of theories.
One such theory is that it was a chance reflection from the lake or even caused by a shiny object on the ground, but it is difficult to prove this was possible.
Oscar Sierra, a UFO researcher based in Costa Rica, said: “It’s one of the most compelling scientific confirmations that UFOs are real."
The group, UAP Media, obtained a new ultra-high resolution image of the original image to assess the photography in more detail.
A statement from UAP Media says that researchers Richard Haines and Jacques Vallee, who published the original photo, were asked not to talk about it by Loaiza’s employers – The National Geographic Institute of Costa Rica.
The image only returned to public view thanks to an April 2021 article in the New Yorker, entitled “How the Pentagon Started Taking UFOs Seriously”.
Reporter Leslie Kean was the person who dubbed the photo “the best photograph of a UFO ever taken”
He said: “There was this disc object and you clearly see the sun reflecting off this round object that’s got a little dot on the top and what’s important about it is that it was a government photo.
"There’s a clear chain of custody. It’s always been in possession of the Costa Rican government so you know it’s authentic and it’s completely unexplained.”
What the Loaiza really captured that day still remains a mystery.
