Woman only just discovers reason you shouldn't flush tampons – and she's not alone – The Mirror

A woman confessed she has gone her whole life without knowing she shouldn’t flush tampons down the toilet – shockingly it seems she’s not the only one out there
Most of us know that flushing anything other than toilet paper down the toilet is bad – right?
Well it seems a whole load of people are only just realising you're not supposed to flush tampons down there – and it's become a huge discussion point. Our toilets at home aren't bins – and the only things that should be going down there are the three P's – paper, pee and poo.
Sewers are only designed to cope with human waste and paper, and anything else, such as wet wipes or even kitchen roll, can easily snag the inside of a pipe and block it. Toilet paper disintegrates in water – but things like tampons and other products don't.
Taking to TikTok, cosmetic tattooer Eda, from the US, shared the revelation: "I've been flushing my tampons for over 20 years. 20 years. I was getting my hair done today and I was telling my hairdresser the house we just bought is on a septic tank and we are converting to a sewage system so one of the things that I can't do on a septic tank is flush my tampon."
She explained the hairdresser had been suitably baffled by this remark, and asked Eda what she meant. After explaining, and seeing the hairdresser's reaction, Eda asked: "What are you supposed to do if you don't flush them?" to which the hair stylist replied: "You put it in the trash, you don't flush it."
Eda couldn't believe what she was hearing, and said she had been to places where it said not to flush sanitary products, but she thought this was to do with their specific plumbing system. "Everywhere I've lived, if there was a toilet, I've put a tampon in it," she said.
Thinking out loud further, she continued: "Why did I not know that you were just not supposed to do that? I literally thought that's where they go. I was never told otherwise. No one had the conversation with me. Am I alone?"
And it turns out Eda wasn't the only one unaware. Thousands of people commented on the video, with one person saying: "Omg. I have ALWAYS flushed tampons." Another added: "I have always flushed tampons. These comments are crazy to me, I've never been told not to." And a third commented: "I have ALWAYS flushed tampons. I thought that’s what everyone did?? Honestly… gonna continue to flush them." "I always thought they just meant the plastic applicator can’t be flushed," said another.
However, others were completely shocked. One said: "These comments are wild. All these people out here flushing tampons." Another added: "Girl I'm so upset with you and everyone flushing tampons. It says not to on the box."
