USMNT GK Turner joins Crystal Palace on loan

Crystal Palace have signed United States men’s international goalkeeper Matt Turner on a season-long loan from Nottingham Forest, the clubs announced Friday.

The deal does not include an option or obligation to make the move permanent, sources told ESPN.

Turner, 30, joins Palace to challenge Dean Henderson for the first-choice keeper spot. He arrives on the same day Palace saw Sam Johnstone join Wolves for a fee that could rise to as much as £10 million.

“I’m really excited to be here — and I’m ready to get to work,” Turner said in Palace’s announcement.

“I’ve heard a lot about [goalkeeping coach] Dean Kiely from Wayne Hennessey, and obviously Dean [Henderson] and Remi [Matthews] have got a lot of experience, so it’ll be great to get to know them, learn how they work, support them in whatever ways I can, but also push them to be the best versions of themselves.”

He was linked with a move away earlier in the transfer window, but Nottingham Forest were reluctant to let him leave. But with the clock ticking down on transfer deadline day, Crystal Palace have made a late move.

Turner has had to vie with Carlos Miguel and Matz Sels this season and has found himself third in the pecking order. Sels has started in the Premier League, with Miguel taking the spot for their midweek League Cup match.

Turner made 17 Premier League appearances for Forest last term but will look to reignite his career at Selhurst Park. He has 44 caps for the USMNT and was the team’s first choice at the Qatar World Cup and in the summer’s Copa América tournament.
