Latest listeria recall yanks frozen waffles from store shelves

Another long list of products is being pulled off of store shelves amid concerns of possible listeria contamination.

TreeHouse Foods has alerted consumers that frozen waffles sold under the Kodiak Cakes label, as well as store labels at Publix, Food Lion, Walmart and Target, should be discarded or returned to stores for a refund.

The complete list of affected products spans 85 pages and can be found here.

As with other listeria-based recalls of late, there have been no confirmed reports of illness due to the product. The possible contamination was found during a routine test of the manufacturing facility.

News of the waffle recall follows an enormous separate recall of ready-to-eat products whose meat and poultry components faced possible contamination. All totaled, 11.8 million pounds of those products were recalled. The list naming them all currently stands at over 340 pages.

This recall is in addition to yet another listeria-based recall of Boar’s Head products, which took place in July and August. In that event, over 7 million pounds of the deli meat was recalled after nine people died and 50 more were hospitalized.

Listeria poisoning is caused by a particularly resilient type of bacteria that can survive and grow even during refrigeration. Symptoms can start within a few hours or days after eating contaminated food, but can take weeks or up to three months to show up. Young people, seniors over the age of 65 and those with weakened immune systems or who are pregnant are most vulnerable.
