The human nose is an enigma.
What’s delightful to one person might have another plugging their nose and running for cover. Despite this, certain unusual smells seem to capture our hearts—or rather, our nostrils—leaving us with a strange sense of comfort or nostalgia.
I took to the streets (and social media) of the SouthCoast to uncover the weird yet wonderful scents people simply can’t get enough of. The results were surprising, humorous, and oddly relatable.
For me, growing up in Westport meant being surrounded by farms, and I developed a soft spot for the sweet scent of cow manure—silage, to be exact. While some might gag at the thought, for me, it’s a memory of home wrapped up in a unique aroma.
Of course, I’m not alone in my love of peculiar smells. Some folks lean toward gasoline fumes or the smoky haze of a firepit, while others gravitate to scents that may seem bizarre at first sniff.
