People are only just realising what bumpy 'teeth' on some scissors actually are for – Express

kitchen scissors or shears isolated on whiteEver wondered what the ‘teeth’ on some pairs of scissors are for?
Most commonly a feature of kitchen scissors, it appears many users of social media platform, Reddit, weren’t aware after an image was shared to the Does Anyone Know subreddit. “Does anyone know what this part of the scissors are for?” asked one user alongside the snap.
Not everyone could agree, however, as scores of people took to the comments section to offer their thoughts. “For taking off tight bottle caps, just put it around the cap and squeeze – the teeth will bite in to grip while the scissors give you more leverage to turn,” one person theorised.
“It’s somtimes called the ‘bone-notch’ or the ‘serration-grip’,” added a second. “They’re generally multi-purpose, and most have been covered in the other comments, but to summarise, they can be used for cracking nuts, gripping or breaking meat bones, opening bottles, and removing raised wine corks.”
Whilst a third shared their belief: “Everyone is saying bottle opener or nutcracker when I assumed it was for stripping herbs. The more you know.”

Others were adamant the purpose was solely for cracking bones, meanwhile. “I’m a chef and they am meant for taking the bones out of the meat,” one person said from experience.”People say they’re nutcrackers, but you grab the meat you put the bone in between those metal things twist and pull the bone out.”
“They’re chicken scissors and it’s for breaking the bones of the chicken,” a second agreed, before a third Reddit user added similarly: “They’re kitchen scissors and those bits are for cracking bones in poultry.”
Whilst a fourth offered a much more detailed explanation, commenting: “They are general purpose kitchen scissors. Used for deboning and or cracking lobster but not limited to those uses. They are for any general purpose the end user can use them for. Had they of been closer I would of said it would be to grab the end of a fabric as you cut, however the scissors pictured are not of those variety.”

They continued: “Those specific pair of scissors are not used for cutting fabrics. Taylors used to use serrated edge blades in order to fray materials at the end when cutting them.
You can get some scissors that are used by seamstresses or taylors that have the serrated edge that are used to cut fabrics that way. However, the scissors you have shown are not those type. In short, general purpose scissors and the section you are referring to is for any multi purpose use.”
However, you plan to use your scissors in future having read these opinions, Food Republic warns: “Regardless of what you’re using your kitchen scissors to open, always keep safety in mind. Always hold scissors with their blades pointed upward, so you never pull up on a lid or bottle cap. Instead, always twist, and be sure to keep the blades as far away from your face as possible.”
