Mom shares 'unique' name of her baby – and it totally flaws hospital nurses – The Mirror US
Choosing the perfect name for your baby can be a real challenge.
It's a decision both parents need to embrace, as it has to carry meaning and it's also a bonus if it withstands the test of time. This might explain why some parents agonize over selecting just the right baby name.
One new mother sparked quite the reaction when she introduced her baby girl, born in January, with her chosen name at the hospital. Taking to Reddit, the mom shared that the name had been one she favoured for some time, but it seemed to catch everyone off guard.
She explained: "My baby girl was born on 1/20/25 and I was a little shocked at the response we got about her. We named her Loretta, and so many nurses said they had never heard the name before, and that it was so pretty and unique.
"When did Loretta become a unique name? I've always thought it was an old school common name, but apparently not anymore? Does nobody remember Loretta Lynn? I felt like I was in a mild Twilight Zone episode."
Since sharing her story, the mum has received a wave of positive feedback, with numerous people praising the "classy" name, though some speculated that the hospital staff might simply be too young to recall the famed American country singer Loretta Lynn, whose illustrious career spanned more than six decades.
Soon after the post went live, people began to weigh in. One user remarked: "Loretta is beautiful. I would say it's uncommon now and thus deemed 'unique'."
Another shared a personal connection, writing: "My daughter is named Loretta too! We've gotten a lot of compliments on her name."
A third added: "I work in geriatrics and everyone seems to have known one person from their past with the name. I think it was a known name at the time but not super common."
Meanwhile, a fourth also commented: "Huh. I wouldn't have considered that unique. Old-fashioned (in a good way) and not popular (also in a good way), but not unique.
"It's a standard old-timey name lol. Not even that old. There's a character on How I Met Your Mother with that name, a very popular show.
"That's how I know it. Congrats on your girl and her beautiful name!"
