NFL rumors: Packers Aaron Rodgers insurance offer turned down by Jets

The Jets want insurance from the Packers in the Aaron Rodgers trade but turned down by far the best offer Green Bay has given them yet.

If it’s not one thing making the Aaron Rodgers trade take forever, it’s another. We’ve heard that the quarterback slowed things down, Rodgers claimed that it was the Green Bay Packers that were holding things up, but then reports have also indicated that the New York Jets are holding things up.

So the latest update in this regard shouldn’t shock anyone in terms of there being yet another holdup. The holdup in this instance, however, is a bit surprising.

One of the big hang-ups for the Jets was reportedly wanting insurance in any Aaron Rodgers trade package in case the quarterback decides that he wants to retire after the 2023 season. There were reports that the Packers were hesitant to include that. However, Yahoo! NFL insider Charles Robinson reported that Green Bay did try to work with this.

Robinson reported that the Packers asked for a 2023 second-round pick and a 2024 first-round pick with a willingness to include a conditional 2025 pick if Rodgers doesn’t play in the 2024 season. But the Jets shot that offer down.

Packers rumors: Jets shoot down Aaron Rodgers trade insurance offer

Perhaps it’s just the Jets playing hardball in this instance because they want protections on the 2024 pick that they would send to Green Bay, but it seems incredibly short-sighted on the part of New York to have the Packers making a compromising concession for insurance in this trade and then say no to that.

It feels like the shortest recap of why the Aaron Rodgers trade hasn’t happened yet is that both teams just keep digging their feet into the mud on various issues. This is another one of those, this time with the Jets to blame.

Draft night, which is April 27, feels like the unofficial deadline for fans to look toward for this trade to get completed. However, if the Jets are turning down deals such as the one reported by Robinson, then the Packers might be really in a tough spot with their quarterback and this trade.
