NFL rumors: Reason for Aaron Rodgers trade hang-up revealed

The New York Jets and Green Bay Packers trade for quarterback Aaron Rodgers is at a stalemate thanks to the asking price.

We knew this, to some extent. The Packers have high expectations for the trade package they’ll receive for future Hall-of-Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The New York Jets, knowing full and well that Rodgers may retire next offseason, don’t want to give up too much.

Below, we’ll discuss the trade offers each team would prefer, and the obvious setbacks to them. Here is the Packers preferred trade of Rodgers.

Packers Get

2023 second-round pick

2024 first-round pick

Jets Get

QB, Aaron Rodgers

For the Jets, giving up two future picks and $60 million for one year of Rodgers is the fear, which could easily turn into a reality. Prior to his darkness retreat, Rodgers made it clear just how close he was to retirement.

Below is the Jets preferred offer for Rodgers:

Packers Get

2023 second-round pick

2024 second-round pick

Jets Get

QB, Aaron Rodgers

Per John Breech of CBS Sports, Woody Johnson has been unwilling to give up a first-round pick for Rodgers. This has been the major holdup. It’s unclear if either side is willing to budge, but Green Bay is intent on receiving at least one first rounder.

NFL Rumors: A trade package that works for Aaron Rodgers

There’s an easy solution here, and it’s picks with conditions placed upon them. If Rodgers plays more than one year, then the Packers receive a 2024 first-round pick. Were he to retire after one season in New York, then Green Bay has to stick with a couple second rounders, at best.

Packers Get

2023 second-round pick

2024 conditional draft pick

Jets Get

QB, Aaron Rodgers

That conditional first rounder is important, and a gamble by New York that Rodgers will play a second season with them. At 40 years old, it’s far from a guarantee.
