The San Francisco 49ers are taking calls on quarterback Trey Lance, the former No. 3 overall pick in the NFL Draft, as they plan to move forward with Brock Purdy.

Plenty of NFL teams could be interested in Lance, but the North Dakota State product hasn’t played a full season in years, and frankly we’re not sure what he’s capable of at this level. Lance has the talent to be a Pro Bowl-caliber passer — it’s why Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch traded up to select him in the first place — but at this point it’s unlikely they’ll receive fair value for him.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network had the scoop on Wednesday morning: “The 49ers have received inquiries from several teams looking into a potential trade for former No. 3 pick QB Trey Lance. The conversations have been the result of SF fielding the calls, not making them, with teams aware that Brock Purdy is likely the future starter.”

It’s important to note that no trade is imminent between San Francisco and an interested suitor, but as the NFL Draft gets closer, that could change.

NFL Rumors: Could the Baltimore Ravens trade for Trey Lance?

The Ravens have yet to sign Lamar Jackson to a long-term contract, thus signaling that the pair remain far off on terms such as guaranteed money. Assuming Lamar does eventually play on his franchise tag, trading for a player like Lance would make a lot of sense. This is doubly true if Baltimore doesn’t like their chances at keeping Jackson long-term, and if the price for Lance isn’t overwhelming.

Lance is by no means worth a first-round pick, but a few Day 2 selections isn’t all that much to give up on a player who, with the right coaching, could be a solid backup plan to Jackson. It helps that Lance has experience in a similar offensive scheme, and has some of the same traits as Lamar such as his escapability and willingness to throw on the run.
