Patrick Mahomes already made a house call to draft pick Rashee Rice

Kanas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes called his newest wide receiver, second-round draft pick out of SMU, Rashee Rice.

The Kansas City Chiefs have had some changeover at the wide receiver position recently. Last year, they traded away Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins. This offseason, after winning Super Bowl 57, watched JuJu Smith-Schuster sign a three-year contract with the New England Patriots and Mecole Hardman joined the New York Jets on a one-year contract.

While the Chiefs did have pass-catching options, it’s never a bad thing to provide quarterback Patrick Mahomes with more receivers. That’s exactly what they did in the NFL Draft.

On Friday in the second round of the draft, the Chiefs traded up to the No. 55 overall pick to select SMU’s Rashee Rice.

As Rice received his phone call from the Chiefs front office and head coach Andy Reid, he also got a call from Mahomes and former SMU quarterback Shane Buechele.

Mahomes is familiar with what Rice can bring to the Chiefs. After all, he did have some throwing sessions with the SMU wide receiver down in Dallas ahead of the draft. Rice confirmed it while speaking with the media after he was selected.

This offseason, Mahomes did throw some passes to Boston College’s Zay Flowers, who was selected 22nd overall by the Baltimore Ravens. If Mahomes gives his thumbs up of approval for Rice, general manager Brett Veach is obviously listening.

Standing at 6-foot-1 and weighing 204-pounds, Rice is coming off of an impressive season. In 12 games, Rice put up 96 receptions for 1,355 yards and 10 touchdowns. Through his four years at SMU, Rice recorded 233 receptions for 3,111 yards and 25 touchdowns.

Rice caught passes from Mahomes this offseason, and he will continue to do so as the newest wide receiver from the Chiefs. He will look to make an impact to help the Chiefs win another Super Bowl title.
