Selena Gomez Announces New Song ‘Single Soon,’ Coming Next Week

Selena Gomez is ending the summer with the first hint of her new music era. The singer announced this morning that while her next album isn’t quite ready yet, she is releasing her first single, fittingly focused on single life. “Y’all have been asking for new music for a while,” she wrote on Instagram. “Since I’m not quite done with SG3, I wanted to put out a fun little song I wrote a while back that’s perfect for the end of summer. SINGLE SOON. August 25th. Presave it now. 😘”

Teaser images include polaroids of Gomez with friends and one image with a sticky note featuring the infamous breakup message Jack Berger gave Carrie Bradshaw on Sex and the City: “I’m sorry I can’t. Don’t hate me.” Next Friday, the world will be able to see whether those photos are Easter eggs for the song’s lyrics.

Speculation about the new song first broke over the weekend when the site illbesinglesoon.com popped up, teasing the Gomez track. It has now been updated to a contest page, which says, “Do you have a friend or loved one going through a breakup, a heartbreak, or a dating dry spell? Celebrate being single soon (or single now) with everything you need for the perfect night out! Complete your entry below and if you win‚we’ll supply the rest.”

Gomez has not hidden her own single status this summer. The actress’ last public romantic relationship was with ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber in 2018. Gomez told Zane Lowe in November 2022 that while she hasn’t had a boyfriend in the public eye in years, she will be divulging details about her private dating experiences in her upcoming music.

She said she’d be “telling stories that people don’t know,” including some about secret relationships. “I created this whole private life that was just mine, and I feel like now I have to tell these stories, and people are going to ask a lot of questions.”
