People bewildered to discover they've been using fans wrong their whole lives – The Mirror
A woman has revealed how she’s been using fans wrong for 28 years – despite thinking there was only one way to use it – and shared a useful tip with others struggling in the heat
Summer may nearly be over but thankfully we can enjoy some unexpected sunshine before the dreary months ahead. This week, Brits can expect to bask in the heat as temperatures are set to rise to 32C. When the warm weather hits, it means many of us will need to pull out our fans once again to keep us from drowning in sweat.
The heat can often become rather irritating when you plan on drifting off to the land of nod. The high temperatures will often result in disturbed and uncomfortable sleep as you kick off the covers in an attempt to stay cool.
A saving grace for the heat is fans, but what if you had realised that you've been using them the wrong way around? Sufferer of sleepless nights Leah White – who boasts more than 8,000 followers on TikTok account @leahwhite4828 – left jaws dropping when she claimed that everyone has been using fans wrong their entire lives.
In a video, the TikToker shared how they've been using fans incorrectly for 28 years – despite thinking there was only one way to use it. Sharing the life hack with other sufferers of the heat, Leah captioned the video: "I need to try this. I have never known this and I am 33."
She explained: "We're in a new build and it's quite a small house, so it retains heat so well and it's absolutely boiling every night. We've been having a fan on and we've been waking up sniffing and we've got a cold – and I'm guessing that's from having a fan on all night.
"I saw someone's TikTok saying that's not how fans are used in bedrooms. I'm 28 years old – and please someone tell me that I'm not the only one who didn't know this. Apparently, you're meant to have the fan facing a window with the windows open – and then you turn the fan on and it basically sucks all of the warm air out of the room outside.
"And then at night when it's cool turn it to other way around and it pulls the cool fresh night air in. I've just had it on for 15 minutes and my room is probably the coolest it has ever been. Did anyone else know this or was it just me being absolutely stupid?" She questioned.
Fans immediately responded, with one person writing: "I didn't know but shall try it." A second penned: "What?!" I've just had it blowing directly in my face." Someone else said: "I'm way older than you and just learned this today."
A third person said: "I never knew that, but I do remember walking past a house that had two fans in a window like that, and I thought that was weird. But I will try it now." Another added: "I need to try this. I have never known this and I am 33."
