How to watch the Emmy Awards for free—without cable

The 75th Primetime Emmy Awards, celebrating the best in American prime time television programming from June 1, 2022, until May 31, 2023, will finally air on Jan. 15. And Apple and ABC are the ones to watch.

This is an unusual Emmy ceremony, as many of the shows being honored ran so long ago. For instance, the third season of “Ted Lasso” is the most nominated comedy. Also up for honors are Hulu’s “The Bear” and Netflix’s Dahmer miniseries.

ABC’s “Abbott Elementary,” meanwhile, could repeat its surprise victory from 2022, when it was the first network show to win the award in eight years.

The votes were cast and counted last August. So this year’s ceremony is a chance to reminisce and celebrate your favorite shows at the same time.

Got questions about the 2023 Emmy awards? We’ve got answers.

When are the Emmy awards taking place?

The 75th Primetime Emmys will be held on Monday Jan. 15 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT

Where can I watch the Emmy awards?

Fox is hosting this year’s ceremony.

Can I watch the Emmy awards online?

You can—and you have several options.

Disney+

Disney’s bundle of Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ no longer has a free trial, so you’ll have to pay $15 per month for all three combined (or $25 per month for no ads on Hulu).

Including Live TV in the bundle bumps the price to $77 per month ($90 with no ads).

Hulu with Live TV

The free trial on this service is no longer offered, as well. It will cost you $77 per month.

YouTubeTV

After up to a two-week trial, you can expect monthly charges of $73.

Sling TV

Dish Network’s Sling lower-tiered “Orange” plan will run you $40 per month. Adding the more comprehensive “Blue” plan bumps the cost to $55 per month. The seven-day free trial has disappeared, but the cord-cutting service is offering 50% off of the first month’s bill.

DirecTV Stream

Formerly known as DirecTV Now, AT&T TVNow and AT&T TV, this oft-renamed streaming service will run you $75 per month and up after the free trial option.

Fubo TV

This sports-focused cord-cutting service carries Fox News. There’s a seven-day free trial, followed by monthly charges of $75 and up, depending on the channels you choose.

Who is hosting the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards?

Black-ish star Anthony Anderson will host the event, taking over for Keenan Thompson, who oversaw the 2022 ceremonies.

When does red carpet coverage for the Emmy awards begin?

You’ll have lots of time to catch up on what the stars are wearing. E! will kick off its Live From the Red Carpet programming at 5:00 p.m. ET. And People and EW are teaming up for red carpet coverage which will be streamlined on the People and EW websites and social channels, including Facebook, YouTube and Twitter/X. That coverage begins at 6:00 p.m. ET.

Why are the 2023 Emmy awards just taking place now?

The 2023 Writers Guild of America and Screen Actors Guild strikes shut Hollywood down for several months last year. Because the actor’s strike was still going on as the original Emmy’s date drew near, organizers decided to push the show back to January, so nominees could attend without having to worry about crossing a picket line.

Which network got the most Emmy award nominations?

HBO once again topped this year’s list with 41 major nominations. Netflix had 23. And Apple TV+ boasted 17 major nominations. ABC led the networks with 7 major nominations.

Will the Emmys be on again this year?

Yes. The awards being handed out tonight are for last year. The 2024 Emmy Awards will air in September on an as-yet undetermined date.
