'Sober curious' woman sparks confusion as she's seen sipping Negroni and 4pm – The Mirror

A woman who describes herself as ‘sober curious’ has sparked confusion on Twitter/X as people attempt to understand what the term means, and why she was able to drink a Negroni
A "sober curious" woman has sparked confusion over the term after sharing a snap of herself drinking a Negroni.
People were left "earnestly" attempting to understand what "sober curious" meant in a now-viral series of posts. Twitter/X users were flummoxed by an Instagram story screenshot where a woman was seen "making the most" of a rainy day on the Parisian canal.
The unnamed woman had been replying to a question about how her day was going. The photo of the woman sipping a Negroni through a straw was captioned: "Making the most out of a rainy day in Paris. I love that the sober curious lifestyle allows for a Negroni by the canal at 4pm :)."
Peter M. Vernig, a licensed psychologist, said the "sober curious" label was a recent "movement" of people trying to drink less or not at all. "The sober curious movement is a growing group of individuals who opt to drink less or not at all as a lifestyle choice," he told VeryWellMind, adding: "The movement pushes back at the normalisation of heavy drinking and stereotypes that those who do not drink are less social or have less fun."
Twitter/X users were split in their reactions to the term. One wrote: "I’m earnestly trying to understand what this means," with a follow-up from the original poster of the screenshot reading: "I tried for so long and gave up and posted it instead."
One user explained the term meant "limiting alcohol but not completely abstaining or committing to abstinence". But others weren't convinced, with one suggesting they instead "say you drink sometimes". Another wrote: "People need to stop this." But some found the 4pm Negroni relatable. One wrote: "Sometimes you see something and you immediately see yourself reflected in it. That's how I feel about this woman's post."
And some were distracted from the "sober curious" debate by the straw planted in the Negroni, with another writing: "I have no idea what this means and it's because I can't commit any brainpower toward understanding it. I am too busy focusing on the negroni straw." Another bemused user wrote: "Also why is she drinking a negroni with a straw?????"
