Lions TE Sam LaPorta makes spectacular one-handed TD catch

DETROIT — Lions tight end Sam LaPorta helped Detroit regain the lead with an impressive one-handed touchdown catch in the back of the end zone.

LaPorta’s 2-yard touchdown from quarterback Jared Goff pushed the Lions ahead 14-10 with 7:44 remaining in the second quarter.

It was LaPorta’s first one-handed catch in his career and the first in the playoffs by any player since Philadelphia’s Dallas Goedert had one in the 2022 divisional round against the New York Giants.

Goff completed the passing touchdown against the Commanders’ blitz.

Earlier, running back Jahmyr Gibbs, the NFL’s regular-season touchdown leader, scored the first touchdown of the Lions’ divisional round game against the Washington Commanders off a goal-line rush in the first quarter on Saturday night.

On the drive — which marked his first four touches of the game — Gibbs rushed for 15 yards, caught a pass for 23 yards, rushed for 9 yards around the right end then capped the drive with the touchdown.

Gibbs is now tied for the second-most touchdowns (35) by a player in their first two seasons in NFL history, including playoffs, per ESPN Research.

Gibbs now has four career postseason touchdowns and is up to 21 total touchdowns this season, which are both the most in Lions history.
