Patrick Mahomes passes Drew Brees for impressive NFL record

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes took possession of the NFL record for the most total yards in a season, passing Drew Brees’ mark.

It feels like there’s nothing Patrick Mahomes can’t do in the NFL. He’s already won a Super Bowl and an MVP award. He’s adding NFL records with every season.

On Saturday against the Raiders, Mahomes picked up another one, passing Drew Brees for the most total yards in a season.

The Chiefs quarterback came into the regular-season finale trailing Brees’ mark by 186. He crossed 5,562 yards with ease in the first half.

Brees set the mark in 2011, but his version of the record came mostly through the air. He had just 86 rushing yards while coming a yard short of Peyton Manning’s single-season record for passing yards. He also did it in fewer games, playing 16 to Mahomes’ 17.

Mahomes entered Saturday trailing Manning by 430 yards. A comfortable lead for the Chiefs over the Raiders meant he didn’t need to air it out much.

Beating Brees came down to rushing yards. Mahomes had 329 yards on the ground through 16 games. He added 29 rushing yards in the first half, scrambling for a first down on third-and-long to lock in the record.

Mahomes and Justin Herbert of the Chargers are the only quarterbacks in NFL history with more than 5,000 yards passing and 300 yards rushing in a season. Mahomes and Brees are the only quarterbacks in NFL history to throw for 5,000 yards and 40 or more touchdowns in multiple seasons. The Chiefs QB hit the 40 TD mark in Week 17.

With the record for total yards, it’s hard to argue for anyone else to win the MVP Award. There are other deserving players to be sure, but Mahomes is on a level even though players can’t reach.
