Everything Andy Reid said about Chiefs clinching the No. 1 seed

Here is what head coach Andy Reid had to say after the Kansas City Chiefs clinched the No. 1 seed in the AFC in Week 18.

The very first game of the final week of the 2022 NFL regular-season, the Kansas City Chiefs had their chance to clinch the No. 1 seed in the AFC and home field advantage in the playoffs. All they needed to do was defeat the rival Las Vegas Raiders, or for the New England Patriots to defeat the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.

The Chiefs made sure they didn’t need help, as they cruised to a 31-13 victory over the Raiders.

After the game, head coach Andy Reid was asked about the team clinching the No. 1 seed in the playoffs and the first-round bye. Reid said that he and the team understand that they still have to “take care of business.”

“We still got to take care of business, our guys understand that,” said Reid. “We’ll give them a few days off there next week, and then get them back in towards the end of the week and get some practice in there, then start the regular week after that. Just take a step back and get yourself where you feel stronger and healthier, mentally and physically.”

With this victory, the Chiefs will have the luxury of getting some extra rest, while the six other AFC teams in the playoffs participate in the Wild Card round. This is the second time in two years the Chiefs clinched the No. 1 seed. They did so back in 2020, when they made it to Super Bowl 55, but lost 31-9 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

It was quite the game for the Chiefs. They were able to show off their “snowglobe” trick play, in which the entire offensive huddle spun around in a circle before running to the line of scrimmage. This play resulted in a touchdown scored by wide receiver Kadarius Toney, but it was called back by officials due to a holding penalty on center Creed Humphrey. Toney would score a touchdown on the very next play.

There was also history made in Las Vegas. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes set the record for most total yards in a single season by a quarterback with 5,614 yards. This record was previously held by Drew Brees, who accumulated 5,562 total yards back in the 2011 season. With this record added to his resume, he now increases his stock as the favorite for the NFL MVP.

The Chiefs will now wait and see how the Wild Card round unfolds next weekend. They will play the lowest remaining seed in the AFC.
