Why Taylor Swift Skipped the 2023 Golden Globes

Taylor Swift’s first big public outing of 2023 hasn’t happened yet. Despite receiving a Best Original Song, Motion Picture nomination for Carolina” from Where the Crawdads Sing, Swift chose not to attend the Golden Globes tonight. Her absence from the Beverly Hills ceremony is pretty understandable for multiple reasons: Swift is nominated in a more minor and competitive category, the Golden Globes itself is recovering from scandal, and the singer is rehearsing for her upcoming Eras tour later this year. Swift likely decided not to stray from work.

Swift teased her tour rehearsal on her Instagram Story while promoting her Midnights digital albums, confirming publicly for the first time that she’s actively preparing for the Eras tour now.

“It’s me! Hi!” she wrote on January 5. “I’m taking a break from tour rehearsal to tell you… there are four hours left to get these four new Midnights digital albums each with unique behind the song bonus material!”

Swift has kept a relatively low profile since Midnights‘ release in October, just popping in on Instagram on her birthday, December 13, to thank her fans for their well wishes. “Thanks for all the beautiful wishes today!!” she wrote. “I spent my 33rd birthday in the studio of course 😏 Wouldn’t have it any other way. Love you!” (Swift was in New Orleans for her birthday, where her longtime boyfriend Joe Alwyn has been filming And with Emma Stone.)

Swift’s last major public comment was in response to the Ticketmaster controversy surrounding the sale of her Eras tour tickets. She expressed her disappointment with Ticketmaster and the struggle her fans faced as they tried to get tickets to see her perform live. She wrote:

Well. It goes without saying that I’m extremely protective of my fans. We’ve been doing this for decades together and over the years, I’ve brought so many elements of my career in house. I’ve done this SPECIFICALLY to improve the quality of my fans’ experience b doing it myself with my team who care as much about my fans as I do. It’s really difficult for me to trust an outside entity with these relationships and loyalties, and excruciating for me to just watch mistakes happen with no recourse.

There are a multitude of reasons why people had such a hard time trying to get tickets and I’m trying to figure out how this situation will be improved moving forward. I’m not going to make excuses for anyone because we asked them, multiple times, if they could handle this kind of demand and we were issued they could. It’s truly amazing that 2.4 million people got tickets, but it really pisses me off that a lot of them feel like they went through several bear attacks to get them.

And to those who didn’t get tickets, all I can say is that my hope is to provide more opportunities for us to all get together and sing these songs. Thank you for wanting to be there. You have no idea how much that means.
