Kellen Moore’s new job makes Cowboys departure look even worse

Former Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore has a new gig, as he’ll take on the same duties with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Kellen Moore’s departure from Dallas was odd to say the least, as the two sides mutually agreed to part ways. Per NFL insider Mike Garafolo, Moore wanted a new challenge, and Jerry Jones let him out of his contract.

Moore is considered one of the bright young offensive minds in football. Dallas, meanwhile, will lean on Mike McCarthy to call the plays moving forward.

The former Boise State quarterback landed on his feet rather quickly, signing on to be the new Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator. Calling plays in an offense which features Justin Herbert, Austin Ekeler and Keenan Allen, just to name a few, is an impossible opportunity to turn down.

Why did Cowboys let Kellen Moore go?

It’s understandable that Moore would want a different challenge — he’d gone about as far as he could with the Cowboys. Dallas lost in the NFC Divisional Round to the San Francisco 49ers.

In Los Angeles, Moore will be one step closer to a head coaching gig for a team that desperately needs some fresh, innovative offensive play-calling. Moore has the weapons to create an offense in his image.

However, it says a lot that Moore would leave a Dallas offense which has its own strengths. Dak Prescott, Ezekiel Elliott, Tony Pollard, CeeDee Lamb and an elite offensive line are nothing to scoff at. Yet, Dallas let Moore walk, and he was picked up in a matter of hours.

Sure, there was some negotiating done behind the scenes. It became clear after the season that Moore was on his way out. But why wouldn’t the Cowboys do everything in their power to make him stay? And if they did, what does it say about Dallas’s prospects that Moore left for the same position on another team?
