Chiefs, Patrick Mahomes just received all the bulletin-board material they’ll ever need

The Kansas City Chiefs have not been underdogs in the playoffs with Patrick Mahomes as their starting quarterback…until now.

Patrick Mahomes has taken the Chiefs to the Super Bowl for the third time in his career. He’s about to be the underdog for the first time.

In fact, the matchup with the Eagles looks like it’ll be the first time in the quarterback’s career that he’ll be a playoff underdog at all, per Todd Furhman of CBS Sports and the Bet The Board Podcast.

Odds for the big game with just over a week to go have Philadelphia favored by 1.5 points. It’s not a huge margin, but it is one that the Chiefs can add to their bulletin board.

Chiefs can add Super Bowl underdog to bulletin board material

Mahomes has gone 15 games in the postseason as the favorite. It looked like that streak would come to an end at 14 games ahead of the AFC Championship Game. Kansas City was heading for underdog status until it became clear that the quarterback would be able to play through a high ankle sprain relatively unhampered.

He’s going to have two weeks of additional recovery ahead of the Super Bowl and is showing no signs of being slowed so far. However, oddsmakers have still gone with Jalen Hurts and the Eagles as slight favorites.

We saw ahead of the AFC Championship Game that the Chiefs are willing to use whatever bulletin board material that gets thrown out there. They latched onto the “Burrowhead” talk coming out of Cincinnati and made those who spouted it eat crow in the end.

Travis Kelce even warned Chiefs fans off giving the Eagles anything to work with.

The machinations of oddsmakers are a different beast than trash talk from an opposing city. Still, you can bet Kansas City players will make a note of being underdogs.

It might not be much, but every bit of extra motivation can make a difference in the end.
