Why Ariana Grande Skipped the 2023 Grammys

It’s been three years now since Ariana Grande attended the Grammys, and tonight didn’t break her skipping streak. The singer chose not to come to the Los Angeles ceremony, although her absence isn’t all too surprising. Not only does Grande not have any nominations this year, but she’s also been in the U.K., filming Wicked, for months. Grande has kept a lower profile generally while working on the project.

She did recently share a TikTok to remind fans of her singing talent while getting ready to shoot Wicked. (She’s playing Glinda in the film adaptation of the hit musical, which will be broken up into two films.) As she explained in beginning of her TikTok, she’s “literally on set filming two musical movies all day, every day,” hence the reason her pop star career has been a little on pause.

Grande captioned the video, “Wanted to sing you a little something but don’t want to sing anything that is not ‘Ozian’ at the moment 🙂 keeping to my little bubble for now … done with lots of love.”

Grande has had 15 nominations and two Grammy wins in her career, picking up Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for “Rain on Me” with Lady Gaga at the 2021 ceremony and Best Pop Vocal Album for Sweetener at the 2019 ceremony.

In addition to music and acting, Grande has also been busy running her own makeup line, r.e.m. Beauty. She explained in September 2021 that the name stems from one of her favorite songs she’s ever recorded. “I decided to name it r.e.m. because I feel like that song really encompasses a lot of my favorite parts of my sound sonically,” she said. “And also REM rapid eye movement: focusing on dreams and focusing on the eyes and eyes being kind of like our best way to articulate—better than you can with words sometimes.”
