Stats show Patrick Mahomes is on track to pass Tom Brady as postseason GOAT

Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes will be compared for the rest of their lives as two of the greatest ever quarterbacks to play the game. Here’s one area in which Mahomes has Brady beat.

When the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII, the Chiefs earned their second Super Bowl in the Patrick Mahomes era, and Mahomes himself took one step closer to reaching the G.O.A.T, former New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady.

The Chiefs quarterback still has quite some ways to go to catch up to Brady’s immortal 23-year career in the NFL, and right now, Brady’s resume makes Mahomes look like a mere rookie.

A new stat shows how despite the disparity, Mahomes has an edge in postseason victories by the age of 27: per this graphic, Brady had a 57-14 playoff record while Mahomes has a 75-19 one.

Brady had three Super Bowl wins to Mahomes’ two; yet in terms of postseason touchdown-to-interception ratio, Mahomes slams it out of the park with 35 to 7 compared to Brady’s 11 to 3.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is already etching his name in postseason history books

Had Mahomes beaten Brady in Super Bowl 55 when the Chiefs faced the Tampa Bay Buccaneers two years ago, he may have settled the debate for good.

Yet Mahomes only managed to put up nine points against Brady’s 31, resulting in a disappointing blowout on the sport’s biggest stage. Though Mahomes is still several decades away from eclipsing Tom Brady for that coveted G.O.A.T. title, he’s at least following the ashes of the superstar legend’s blazing trail.

Mahomes’ 2022 Super Bowl win already has some claiming he’s a future Hall-of-Famer and perhaps the greatest ever already. His quarterback play contrasts quite a bit from that of Brady’s, and the two have played in markedly different situations in their respective careers. Brady, some might say, was carried to the Super Bowl early in his time in New England with a top-ranked defense and impenetrable offensive line.

Mahomes helped Kansas City reach championships not because of but in spite of his team’s defense, and he could be considered the flashier, “social media quarterback” between the two.

Postseason differences aside, both Mahomes and Brady boast multiple Super Bowl wins and both, apparently, party like wild animals afterward. This all-time G.O.A.T. debate won’t be put to bed for another two decades and perhaps never will.
