Analyzing potential trade targets for new general manager Omar Khan as he approaches his first offseason running Steelers front office operations.

Historically, the Pittsburgh Steelers have not been known to make big splashes in the offseason via trade or free agency. But, a new regime, led by general manager Omar Khan, will have its first opportunity to manage the Pittsburgh Steelers’ offseason moves and here we’ll analyze some trade ideas he should consider.

During the 2022 season, the Steelers barely missed the playoffs in improbable fashion after starting the season 2-6 after their bye week. It appeared as though the team was rapidly approaching an offseason rebuilding effort. After the spirited finish to the season, which ended with four straight wins, the offseason looks more like an opportunity to retool than to outright rebuild.

The Steelers have a lot of talented, young players set to lead the way, but the supporting cast is lacking. On the offensive side of the football in particular, none of the following leaders have been in the league for more than two years: Kenny Pickett, Najee Harris, George Pickens, or Pat Freiermuth. As such, there is little need to address the offensive skill positions, there is a need to bolster the offensive line and various positions on defense.

The correct approach for Pittsburgh would be to take this offseason as an opportunity to use the totality of their assets to address team needs to create an environment their young leaders can thrive in.

3. Steelers bring in a veteran tackle for late-round picks

The cap implications of this trade may be a bit unpalatable, but Donovan Smith is in the final year of his Buccaneers contract and could be a cap casualty. Pittsburgh’s offensive line had below-average performance across the board in 2022. That’s concerning for a young quarterback that is still raw and developing. It’s particularly concerning, given that the worst of the group up front was left tackle Dan Moore.

The left tackle is entrusted with protecting the quarterback’s blindside and is among the most important positions in football. While Donovan Smith had his own share of struggles in 2022, he also has a prior track record of high-level play and is still relatively young, at 29 years old. Smith would be an upgrade and would get a chance to revive his career in Pittsburgh.

The upside is unquestioned with Donovan Smith, and this is a unique scenario where the Steelers could likely acquire him for a low-value asset, given the Buccaneers would receive significant cap savings as a result of the trade.
