Latest NFL arms race is not what you’d expect and will be noticeable
There has been a recent boom in the NFL, and that is stadium renovations, some of which we will see as early as the 2023 season.
In January 2022, construction began on Gillette Stadium, the home of the New England Patriots. The Kraft family has invested over $500 million in improving Gillette throughout its first 20 years since the stadium opened in 2002.
The most recent renovations include:
- The largest outdoor high-definition stadium video board in America, measuring 22,000 square feet.
- A reimagined and experimental lighthouse will stand 218 feet high and offer views of the stadium, field, Patriot Place, and beyond from a 360-degree.
- Fifty thousand square feet of glass-enclose hospitality and function spaces.
- 360-degree connectivity between all stadium levels (a feature only available on the main concourse).
New and improved concession locations. - A grand staircase leads to the main concourse at the stadium’s north end.
- The lower plaza has a new fan activation area, revitalized fan entrances, and more outdoor gathering spaces.
In December, NFL owners approved the Tennessee Titans proposed $2.1 billion stadium and the Buffalo Bills’ $1.4 billion new stadium, both expected to open as early as the 2026 season. They also approved the Dallas Cowboys’ $295 million stadium upgrades and $100 million upgrades to the Denver Broncos Empower Field.
Giant NFL screens are taking over the NFL stadiums
A recent Reddit post showed Gillette Stadium’s newest outdoor screen, the largest outdoor screen in the world.
Gillette Stadium is not the only stadium that will show changes in 2023. Lambeau Field, the home of the Green Bay Packers, will also have newly installed 4K video boards at both the north and south ends of the stadium. The wider video boards replace the monitors installed ten years ago.
Mike Moynihan, the Packers’ director of facility operations, explained how much the video boards have changed.
“They’ve grown from 110 feet by 48 feet to 220 feet by 48 feet.”
The six-millimeter pixel spacing is going to be such a clear picture, and they’re huge. It’s just going to be exciting.”
In addition to the new end zone boards, Lambeau’s east and west side scoreboards will be upgraded.
One of the most impressive screens in all of the NFL exists inside SoFi Stadium, the home of the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers. The stadium includes the Infinity Screen by Samsung, an ovular, double-sided 4K HDR video board, the first of its kind, suspended from the roof over the field.
