Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler each didn’t have the performance they would’ve liked in the PGA Championship, which came on the heels of a crazy week for both players
Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler finally got off the emotional rollercoaster of the US PGA after a crazy week for the top two players in the world.
The Ulsterman had won his second consecutive event at the Wells Fargo Championship the previous Sunday and filed for divorce on Monday before extending his Major drought to 3,570 days.
Scheffler, the Masters champion, got arrested and handcuffed before returning to shoot a second round 66 – and said he was “excited to get home” to his wife Meredith and baby son after his closing 65. Both had come in with different expectations.

McIlroy won his fourth and last Major here in August 2014 and claimed the “stars are aligning” after back-to-back wins on his return to Kentucky. He started with rounds of 66 and 71 and was only three shots off the lead during the third round before closing with 68 and 67. In a week of super-low scoring here – Xander Schauffele and Shane Lowry both shots 62 – he finished on 12-under par.
While Scheffler spoke to host broadcaster CBS before a press conference, McIlroy took only two questions from RTE Sport.
“Obviously started the week well, and then I've obviously played decent over the weekend,” he said. “I had a six-hole stretch on the back nine yesterday, not being able to hole any putts, I'll probably rue that. Then the 71 on Friday, as well, was obviously not what I was looking for. Obviously put myself too far back.”

After playing six events in the last seven weeks, the world No.2 added: “I've got a week off and then I'm playing another four in a row. I'm feeling good about my game.”
Scheffler had also won his last event – the RBC Heritage – and arrived here last Monday to play his first tournament since the birth of Bennett on May 8.
The world No.1 was arrested and charged for assaulting a police officer before returning to Valhalla to shoot an amazing 66 on Friday.
The Masters champion finally showed the strain of his ordeal when he shot a Saturday 73 to snap his streak of 42 rounds at par or better on the PGA Tour. But his tournament ended with a 65 – and a huge ovation walking off the final green. The American, who finished on 13-under par, said: “I think ‘hectic’ would probably be a good description of my week. Overall right now I'm fairly tired. I put my head down on the scorer's table and I think I about fell asleep. I think it finally hit me what really happened Saturday morning. I was able to post a decent finish towards the end of the week kind of running on fumes.
“It was obviously not what I was hoping for going into the week, but overall I'm proud of how I fought and excited to get home and get ready for next week.”
Scheffler will be arraigned on four charges in Louisville tomorrow (Tuesday May 21) before the Charles Schwab Challenge starts in Fort Worth on Thursday. “I'm planning to play next week,” he said. “As far as the off-the-course stuff goes, I'm not really sure.”
